My Motorcycle has some rust building on it, need advice on removing mild rust?

I live in Michigan and bought a Triumph Bonneville America last fall. I have it currently parked under my apartment's car port and chained to a bar near the bike. I made the mistake of waiting to purchase a cover until now though. I am getting ready to cover it for the remainder of winter but for now it has some mild rust spots forming in different areas. Would steel wool be okay or are there better products available for something like this? Thanks for the help.
