How would you ask frequent pengers in your car for gas money?

It can be awkward asking for money. What I usually do is when we are getting coffee or lunch or something I say, well you get this bill and i'll get the fuel bill. Or well i've paid for the fuel, why don't you pick this up and we'll call it even.
