What to do period at skool?

A hot little 10 year old comes up to me and says, :Mrs. Fong, my pee pee is bleeding. I tell her to turn aroung and her is all red. I tie my sweatshirt around her waist becuz i didnt hav anything with me (we were in the library) what should i hav done? when the cl wuz at recess i explained to her about periods and taught her how to use a pad. what should i hav done instead? or was what i did correct?
